Historical Background
Functional Inc. started out in 1976 selling typewriters and mailing systems. In the same year, it introduced Glory currency handling equipment from Japan and Oce wide-format printing equipment from the Netherlands. The example of the Central bank in using mechanized banknote counting machines encouraged commercial banks to employ mechanized bank note counting as well. Today, Glory machines are widely used throughout the banking system as well as retail establishments, casinos and forex dealers.
Functional also succeeded in the wide-format printing market with the introduction of Oce’s non-ammonia printing machines. The Oce line expanded into document printing generating 12.5 million prints per month until 2005. With acquisition of Oce by Canon, Functional assumed distributorship of Rowe wide-format printing systems from Germany, with installations in major engineering and construction companies, government infrastructure projects and job printers.
In 1989, Functional represented Fuji Systems to sell check encoding machines, subsequently superseded by check reader/sorters when the Philippine Clearing House shifted to electronic check clearing. In 2017, the clearing house introduced check image, clearing system (CICS) which led to sales of check reader/scanners coupled with CICS
software for central check clearing operations. Functional is partnered with InsiteMy/Systems of Malaysia in installing CICS.
Functional continues to lead in introducing new technologies in cash and check processing as well as in engineering printing systems.
